Zaledwie siedemnastoletni Martin już trzy razy opuścił swe rodzinne strony, czyli Góry Południowe i udał się w długie podróże praktycznie przez całe Królestwo Calvertu. W ich trakcie nabył doświadczenia, stwardniał, ale jednocześnie stał się podejrzliwy, nieufny, a do tego większość jego znajomości zaczęła się opierać na kłamstwach. Wszystkie jego podróże kończyły się szczęśliwie, lecz podczas trzeciej coś poszło nie tak- Martin skierował się w drogę powrotną zbyt późno. Spadł śnieg, przełęcze stały się nieprzejezdne... Okazało się, że tą zimę spędzić będzie musiał w Kersby- małej wiosce na odludziu, gdzie wszyscy boją się obcych i są wobec nich podejrzliwi. Tam zaś Martin poznaje Sally, córkę okolicznego mieszkańca, czyli twardego i odważnego Josepha, którego przyjaciele uwielbiają, a przed którym wrogowie drżą. Dzięki Sally Martinowi udaje się zdobyć zaufanie ludzi z Kersby i jego życie tam zaczyna się układać. Lecz nagle pojawia się przed nim jeden, ale za to wielki problem. Ktoś terroryzuje mieszkańców. Jedni zwą go magiem inni szarlatanem, jeszcze inni po prostu mordercą. Jednak dla Martina liczy się tylko to, że człowiek ten zaczyna się nim interesować, a to oznacza, że będzie musiał walczyć o swoje bezpieczeństwo.
