The whole story kicks off with their dad, Big John, disappearing at sea. This leaves his son, John B Routledge and his little sister;
Elena Taylor Routledge
Living on their own, constantly trying to avoid child protective services. The search for their dad is what really sets things in motion. Elena, being two years younger, might initially be a bit more reckless but smarter and confident, and her loyalty to John B.
And her desire to find answers about their dad quickly spiral.
As they dive deeper into the mystery, they're not just dealing with the treasure hunt but also the class divide on the Outer Banks - the wealthy Kooks and the working-class Pogues. Elena, with her fiery spirit, would probably have a few run-ins with the Kooks, maybe even more so than John B, defending her brother and their Pogue friends.
Particular she runs into the lead honcho, Rafe Cameron, practically the king of kooks, and a true psychopath. Fighting the kooks, deciphering clues, outsmarting other hunters, and facing all the dangers that come with a treasure hunt, all while trying to keep their little family unit together leads with a huge amount of uncertainty about their future.
