"You're not alone, Oak," Peter said softly. "Not unless you choose to be."
Oakley blinked fast, pulling the hoodie tighter around her as if it were armor. "Can I stay here tonight? I just... I don't wanna go back yet."
"Yeah," Peter quickly said, almost before she finished her sentence. "Yeah, of course."
They ended up curled at opposite ends of his bed, a shared blanket in the middle. They didn't talk much more. Just let the closeness say everything words couldn't.
For the first time in a long while, Oakley closed her eyes and didn't dream of darkness.
And for once, the silence didn't hurt.
The city kept moving, but for now, she didn't have to.
Not being alone felt like the bravest thing she'd ever done.
She didn't know all of that was about to come crashing down.
