In a world where humans are considered nothing more than commodities-bought, sold, and studied like exotic livestock-Vareshian university student Lorian Thorne receives a young 6 inch human as part of a groundbreaking class experiment. Unlike the older, scarred, and vacant humans distributed to his peers, Lorian's human is barely more than a child, wide-eyed and trembling in the corner of his cage. Lorian has always understood humans the way his parents taught him: resources, tools, valuable for their rarity but not worth empathy or consideration. Yet as he observes his human's fragile existence and begins to interact with him, Lorian starts questioning everything he's been told. The boy's small, defiant attempts at connection force Lorian to confront not only the morality of his own actions, but the brutal reality of the society he lives in. As the class progresses, Lorian must navigate the expectations of his Vareshian peers, his parents' ingrained beliefs, and his growing sense of responsibility toward the life in his care. What starts as a sterile academic exercise becomes a journey of unexpected connection, forcing Lorian to face the uncomfortable truths about his world, his family, and ultimately, himself.

When Eliana Waverly and her mom and brother are assigned a new identity and forced to move after their dad's involvement in a high-profile trial, Ellie is convinced things couldn't get worse. But they do. For one, at her new school, she's assigned to work on an English project with the most arrogant boy she's ever met. Max Tyrian is a walking anomaly. After all, what kind of star athlete also smokes cigarettes and has a 4.0 GPA? Even worse, he knows her real name and Ellie can't figure out how. She needs to know the truth, because it could put her family in danger. Which is why, when he asks her out, she reluctantly agrees. But dating Max only leads to more questions, especially when he makes fire appear out of thin air after a skiing accident and effortlessly lifts his truck when it's stuck in a snow bank. And then there's the rumors about him and arson, which he claims are true. And even more bizarre than that--a hike into the mountains to find buried treasure. While it's nice to suddenly have thousands of dollars to spend on clothes, Ellie would much rather know the truth. Or would she?

Tara didn't remember much of the time before the outbreak. What others held onto in these frightful times, she tried to forget, praying it'd someday disappear, like sketches in the sand being washed away by the weightless tug of the waves. The only memory that she gave the time of day to be replayed, the one thing she kept going back to, was how quickly it happened. No one expected it, anticipated such a sudden tragedy. It was like it was creeping up on them all; it was always meant to happen, always going to, but no one could have known. Day by day it crept closer, gradually looming over them all like a storm cloud, just waiting for the moment where everything would change. She hated them. Brutes, she and a few others has taken to calling them, though they were known by many other names to whoever was left out there. Unimaginably enormous, senseless giants. They were all once people, that she knew. Not anymore. That much was clear. They chased the scent of a human like mindless dogs, satisfying their unquenchable craving for human flesh, before it arose again, and they went back to scavenging their broken world for the prey. It was bizarre how they'd once all been people. They had lives with a family, friends, likes and dislikes, interests and passions... only to be degraded to the zombie-like giants they were now. No thoughts, no emotions. No empathy. They took what they could, no matter how it might mean everything to someone else, before they came back for more. So why was this one different?
