Five years after the Kyan invasion of Praxatillus nearly succeeded, there is an uneasy feeling in the Realm that the worst of the war lies ahead. With the Guardian and combined Wayship/Praxatillus fleet still missing, Sabrina Devon has been trying to train the Inheritor to defend them all in her mother's absence. But when a massive Kyan troop ship appears in orbit without warning, it seems they have run out of time....

Sabrina Devon and her husband Ford are on their way home after five years spent as the first Praxatillian ambassadors to Homeworld, anticipating the birth of their first child, when they barely survive a Kyan attack, one of many by the Kyan and their Reissian allies on Realm worlds. Once home, Sabrina helps defend Praxatillus from one such attack and discovers that the Great Crystal and her baby may be at odds. Then the Kyan launch a surprise invasion, landing Reissian troops to occupy Praxatillus' cities and military installations in a search for the Inheritor of the Great Crystal of Miah. As Sabrina, Baldaran, and other leaders raise the citizens of Praxatillus into a resistance force, the Kyan appear to withdraw from the planet. It looks as though the battle is won when the allied fleet arrives-until the Kyan spring their trap: a massive Way that sucks much of the fleet into it and threatens to engulf Praxatillus as well. A Way from which there is almost certainly no return....

On medical leave due to the genetic changes begun by an ancient plan embedded in the Great Crystal, Sabrina Devon and her fiancé negotiate not only their relationship but also planetary politics. Queen Maratobia gives birth to a daughter with powerful telepathic abilities who cannot be raised among non-telepaths, and after giving her up to a foster family, Mara needs time to recover. She appoints her son Baldaran and Sabrina as co-regents in her absence. But none of them anticipated a plot against the Guardian's children-or the alliance of three old enemies that will threaten the entire Realm.
