Her parents divorce was a messy, loud thing but she was too little to really get it. All she knew was her world got sliced in half. Mom took her, Dad took her brothers. Life became two separate tracks her mom's house on one side, her dad's on the other, with an invisible wall keeping them apart. For twelve years, she made it work. Her mom's place was cozy enough, with a stepdad who did his best, even if it wasn't always perfect. Her brothers faded into blurry memories, just faces from old photos. She got used to the split, the two different worlds. Then an accident flipped everything upside down. Her mom was gone, her stepdad was stuck in a hospital bed, and suddenly, she had to pack up and move in with her dad. But it wasn't the dad she remembered. He'd remarried, and his house was a whirlwind of four step siblings and her brothers, who weren't kids anymore. She wasn't that same little girl either. She figured it'd be about adjusting to a crowded house, maybe learning to get along with new people. But it turned out to be so much more unanswered questions, secrets everyone seemed to dodge, and the messy, confusing journey of figuring out who she was and who she wanted to be.

Background: I have an older brother named Chris, and a younger sister named Reagan. My parents picked our names last minute because they didn't really care about what they were going to name us. My family lives in a huge house in Texas. My dad is a doctor and my mom is a lawyer so our family is pretty much rich. My parents rarely pay attention to any of us because they never wanted us. They give us money every month so that we won't have to bother them when we need money for something. I could probably be happy about that if my life was actually good and not a living hell. My brother is 23 years old so he doesn't live with us anymore. He's really smart and he's been at Yale since he was 19. He's majoring in music. My little sister is 15 years old and she's super friendly. She's also really smart, but she doesn't act like it because she doesn't want to be judged. She's one of the most popular girls at our school and she loves to be center of attention. That's how it all starts.

Fifteen-year-old Ainsley Myers has spent most of her life learning how to stay quiet. While her older twin sister, Allison, was praised for being bold and outspoken, Ainsley learned that silence was safer. Their mother's cruelty always seemed to find her more easily, and the fear that shaped her childhood taught her how to disappear, to take up as little space as possible, to speak only when spoken to, and to trust no one except the one person who never failed her: Allison. When their foster dad is arrested, the girls are taken to a police station and given a truth that turns their lives inside out. They weren't abandoned. They were stolen. Somewhere beyond the life they've known is a father who never stopped searching, brothers who grew up believing they'd come home, and a family ready to welcome them without hesitation. For Allison, the change feels like a chance to finally breathe. For Ainsley, it feels like danger. Because love is unfamiliar. Safety feels temporary. And a house filled with strangers, no matter how kind, triggers every instinct she's ever learned. As Allison begins to settle into this new world, Ainsley clings to the only certainty she's ever had: her sister. But the closer they get to belonging, the more Ainsley fears what will happen if Allison no longer needs her the same way. As Ainsley navigates a life shaped by patience instead of punishment, she must confront a question she's never allowed herself to ask: How do you learn to accept love when surviving meant believing you were never meant to be loved at all?
