The people of Alto, Georgia noticed the family's habits and tendencies, and some of the boys decided Juniper fitted their agenda for bullying. So, you can guess what they did. Being hit in the head by a football ball at age 11 made Juniper change in some way, being more chaotic, eccentric, 'weird'. He wasn't popular by any means, but he wasn't a nobody. He was everywhere he needed to be. He doesn't truely hate Juniper - and she doesn't hate him - but with his whole baseball teammates being her harassers, he has no chance of properly being 'friends' with her. So he acts cold to her, but then again it could just be him being a teenager.
