After meeting Six, Mark decides to tell his parents. In this world, if you describe anything like that, you get locked up until you turn 13. Little Mark has 9 years before release. He meets others, who have reported similar things to their parents. Turns out, he wasn't crazy, as he slowly watches all his friends perish to the alterate-infested mental asylum.
