After the ninth nuclear world war, in the year 3097, the world is largely uninhabitable, and the former United States has been broken up into warring republics. Noah Euler is enlisted in the California Republic, where he has just started his training, but soon he's sent to the front lines where he navigates a terrifying and dangerous war, with betrayals and horrifying truths at every turn.

Andrzej is a normal teenager who doesn't really get along with his parents. Then, one day, the Germans invade his hometown, Danzig (modern day Gdansk), Poland, in World War II. Andrzej escapes to the sewers, where he discovers an underworld of resistance. He finds his peace in the sewers for a while, and is nicknamed "the sewer rat." However, after a series of mishaps, he ends above ground, experiencing firsthand German occupation. Which side will he choose?
