Nalani has experienced more tragic loss than most her age. Her grief rules her, taking control of her life and chipping away at her sense of self. After deciding to get a job at a local record shop, Nalani grows acquainted with the shop owners, Billie and Finneas O'Connell. Nalani immediately intrigues Billie, and Billie makes it her mission to peel back the copious layers Nalani has wrapped around herself. Despite her curiosity about Billie, Nalani is plagued with survivor's guilt and has made a personal vow prohibiting anyone from getting too close, including Billie.
