The cavern was dim, lit only by a few flickering torches. Elena, now 55 but still carrying the same fire in her eyes, shifted slightly and whispered, “Isabel… you alright?”
Behind her, Isabel — brilliant as ever at 49 — let out a small huff. “I’m fine. Mostly annoyed. I told you that new energy scanner was picking up something strange.”
Elena smiled despite the situation. “And I told you we’d be fine.”
“Well,” Isabel murmured, “we’re currently not fine.”
Footsteps echoed through the cavern. The sisters straightened as a cloaked figure approached — the leader of the treasure‑hunters who had ambushed them in the jungle.
“You two have caused us trouble for decades,” the figure said. “But today, we finally get what we came for — the Heart of Avalor.”
Elena lifted her chin. “You’ll never unlock it. Only someone with pure intentions can.”
The figure scoffed and walked away, leaving two guards behind.
Isabel leaned closer. “Elena… remember the emergency clasp release I built into our travel belts?”
Elena blinked. “You mean the thing you said I’d never need?”
“Yes. That one.”
Elena laughed softly. “Tell me where it is.”
With quiet teamwork — Isabel giving instructions, Elena doing the reaching — the sisters managed to activate the tiny mechanism. A faint click sounded.
Elena whispered, “Ready?”
“Always,” Isabel replied.
In perfect sync, they sprang into action, slipping free and surprising the guards. Elena swept one off balance while Isabel grabbed a fallen lantern and waved it threateningly.
Moments later, the sisters were racing down the cavern tunnel, breathless but grinning.
“Elena,” Isabel said, “next time we go exploring, we’re bringing a full security team.”
Elena laughed. “Next time, we’re going on a beach vacation.”
