Seventeen year-old Jade Andrews never wanted to move to Fairview - a quiet, gray town where the houses all look the same and secrets hang heavier than the rain. With her abusive, alcoholic stepfather as the only person waiting for her at home, Jade learns early that safety doesn't exist - not in her house, and not in her own skin. She's small, just 4'10", with long brown hair and deep brown eyes that have learned how to avoid attention. But on her first day at Fairview High, attention finds her anyway. It starts with laughter. A shoulder check. A whispered insult. Then comes Hunter Lockwood - the school's rugby captain. Six foot five, blonde hair, aqua-blue eyes, and a calm, predatory confidence that makes everyone else follow his lead. Along with his friends - Noah, Xavier, Zach, and Luke - Hunter rules the halls with charm and cruelty in equal measure. To them, Jade is just a new game. To Jade, they're the reason she starts walking faster every morning and sleeping less every night. But beneath Fairview's perfect surface, something darker is brewing - and the line between victim and villain begins to blur. Because sometimes, the quietest person in the room is the one who finally breaks.

Mattheo gripped her wrists, not to pull her closer, but to hold her at bay. His knuckles were white. "Consider me dead." He whispered, his eyes swimming with a pain so deep it looked like drowning. "Because I would rather you hate me and be alive than love me and be buried. Next year... there is no 'us.'" He let go of her wrists as if her skin had burned him. The silence that followed was heavier than the shouting, the kind of silence that happens right after a fuse has run out, but before the world actually ends. "You're a coward." She whispered, the word hit him harder than the shove did after he had let go of her wrists. Her eyes were burning with unshed tears. "You're so fucking afraid of losing me that you're willing to get yourself killed." Mattheo flinched as if she'd slapped him. For a second, the boy she loved flickered in his eyes, longing, desperate, and terrified. Then, his expression went dead. The shutters came down, leaving him looking like a marble statue of a prince who had already lost his kingdom. "Call me whatever you want." He said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "But stay away from me. If you see me in the corridors, turn around. If I look at you, look away. From this moment on, I don't know you." He turned to leave, his cloak billowing behind him like a funeral shroud. The explosives had gone off, just like they always did between them. But this time, there was no smoke to clear, no thrill in the aftermath. There was only the smell of burnt air and the realization that Parker was standing in the middle of a ruin he had built as an attempt to keep her from harm. |+18| And then I said; "What was the magic word?" He rolled his eyes. "Fuck off." I raised my eyebrows, crossing my arms. I was definitely going to take advantage of this. "I'm going to kill you-" He exhaled sharply through his nose, forcing himself to shut up. If he pushed me any further, things wouldn't end well for him. He stayed quiet for a moment, biting his cheek, looking around to make sure no one would hear, then; "...Please?" he forced out. My smile widened. I leaned down and slipped back under his arm. He looked at me with pure hatred. "When I recover, I am definitely killing you, Hufflepuff girl." My jaw tightened, but I forced a smug smile. After all these years around his close friends, he still didn't know who I was. He'd never tried. "Don't worry, you won't even remember me when we meet again." But fate would deceive us, and in the worst way possible....
