Mike Wheeler regresa en verano a Hawkins antes de publicar su segundo libro, intenta reconocer algún sentimiento familiar en su antigua casa donde aún viven Karen y Holly. No vuelve solo, sus amigos también vuelven como de costumbre siempre que tienen vacaciones, aunque es la primera vez que Mike vuelve, ya que quería alejarse de todo recuerdo de Ce. Al ser el primero en llegar al pueblo, está solo y decide ir al sótano, en él escucha algo viniendo de un walkie talkie viejo por el que años atrás se comunicaba con la persona que mas ama.
