Asami is in love with Korra. After Korra leaves for three years and cuts off all contact with anyone, Asami falls into a deep depression. Nothing seems like it will be able to fix her accept Korra.

Perhaps this is the perfect situation for Korra to develop her relationship with Asami from just friends to potential lovers.
