Many previous generations of cells out there in space have tried to become "Life" But if we find extraterrestrial life forms that mean there has already been a bacterial cell that has evolved before us meaning that we are not the leader on the staircase, and a supposed death wall could approach. Finding remains of alien life would mean that there were others who tried to find the staircase, but failed because of a fall in civilisation, the extinction of species.
