A man from Earth finds his way to a game world, full of magic, monsters and battle, and finds his way out again, bringing his native miqo'te bride with him. But you can't go to a game world and come back unchanged. Earth is no longer his home, and it was never hers. A serialized story based on the online game Final Fantasy XIV, told in journal entries reflecting each of the characters' points of view. Set in modern-day Oklahoma, it's the story of a married couple -- artisans, explorers, wielders of weapons and magic -- together facing a world that has no idea what they are and what they're capable of. (Knowledge of FFXIV and online roleplaying games in general is useful but not required to enjoy the story.) "We are storytellers. One choice changed the fate of Middle Earth forever. ~~*~~ Fingon and his people have been betrayed by those he once held most dear. But upon reaching Middle Earth and seeking those who owe him recompense, he finds his half-cousin has been captured by the Dark Lord and suddenly he must make a choice: To allow hatred to bring about the doom of the elves, or to put it aside and rescue the cousin who betrayed him to bring together the sundered kindred. An elven epic in three parts. Or, how one prince's choice saved Middle Earth. ~~*~~ "...he dared a deed which is justly renowned among the feats of the princes of the Noldor: alone, and without the counsel of any, he set forth in search of Maedhros; and aided by the very darkness that Morgoth had made he came unseen into the fastness of his foes." - The Silmarillion, JRR Tolkien

One reckless dare. One summer agreement. No expectations. The Summer We Pretended is a quiet, slow-burning short story about timing, restraint, and the kind of love that arrives softly and stays unspoken. All characters and events in this story are fictitious, and any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental. Any similarities in plot to other works, movies, books, or elsewhere are completely unintentional and coincidental. I work hard to ensure my stories are original, from character creation to the storyline. I never publish unless I am 100% satisfied. The powerful have bottled it, priced it, and called it holy. Every flicker, every breath, must be paid for in Lumen. Lucy Farrow was born in the Gloom, where the air tastes of rust and hope is a dangerous thing. Her mother taught her to keep her glow low - to survive unseen. But when the light inside her begins to stir, Lucy's secret could unravel the order that keeps their divided city alive. High above, in the marble halls of the Halo, Prince Cassian Soleyne uncovers a secret among ink and dust - a forbidden lineage that could unmake the order he was born to protect. His duty is to snuff it out: his heart tells him to save it. As rebellion brews in the dark and doubt kindles in the light, their paths will cross - and together they will awaken a fire long thought dead. A Radiant who could bring back the dawn... or burn the world to ash. ⸻ ✧ ⸻ His guest merely nodded sharply. "Until next time, mister Briar". With that, he turned and marched toward the door - his colleagues followed him close behind. Lucy could hear their footsteps fade away and relief washed over her. As soon as it did, the lanterns of the chandelier rattled softly - the Lumen danced for a split second, as if celebrating. But that was enough. The agents abruptly turned around, having seen the shadows on the floor - slowly, they aimed their emotionless gazes skyward, staring at the chandelier. "Tell me, mister Briar", the captain spoke, his eyes still fixated upon the lamps, "Does your Lumen always malfunction like this?" The Lantern Man tapped with a finger on the desk. "As a matter of fact, sir - yes, it does. It's still an old batch: it flickers all the time. I ought to get it replaced soon".
