Once, Ashton Jacob Halstead was the one being taken home - the younger brother Jay and Will refused to leave behind, the boy they pulled out of an abusive home and loved until he finally believed he was safe. Now he's grown, married to Maya Adelyn Halstead, and raising children of his own in the kind of home he used to dream about. A home built on love, patience, and choice. But fatherhood is not always easy when you were never shown what a real father should be, and some days the weight of it all presses against old wounds in ways Ashton never expects. Through every hard moment, every quiet fear, and every doubt he tries to carry alone, Jay and Will are still there. So is his mom. So is Rylan, still his best friend and still one of the steadiest parts of Ashton's life. Because growing up never meant he stopped needing the people who saved him - and home never stopped being the people who refused to let him go.

It's not the bullet you see coming that kills you. It's the air you breathe." When a routine surveillance op in Millennium Park turns into a biological nightmare, Detective Jay Halstead finds himself tackled into the pavement by a woman he's never met: FBI Special Agent Riley Thorne. Sharp, relentless, and haunted by a past she won't discuss, Riley has been hunting a domestic terror cell known as The Purge for months. Now, they've finally struck, releasing a fast-acting synthetic toxin into the heart of the city. With a city-wide quarantine in effect, Jay and Riley are forced into a "Partners in Peril" alliance that blurs the lines between federal jurisdiction and street justice. As the clock ticks down, they must navigate a crumbling Chicago Med-where Jay's brother, Will, fights a losing battle against the mounting body count-and rely on the heroes of Firehouse 51 to pull them from the literal flames of a secondary conspiracy. As the physical symptoms of the toxin begin to take hold and the suspects stay one step ahead, Jay and Riley discover that the only thing more dangerous than the virus is the spark growing between them. In a city gasping for air, can they find the antidote before Chicago-and their chance at a future-suffocates?
