For seventeen-year-old Aru Shah, the Hamptons is a battlefield of old money, starched linen, and suffocating whispers. Eight years ago, her father's failed corporate coup against the multi-billion-dollar Acharya Media stripped her branch of the family of their wealth, their reputation, and their seat at the table. But following her father's recent death, a fragile olive branch from her wealthy aunt brings Aru and her mother back to the world they were erased from, the glittering lakeside estates and private lawns of the Midsummer Cotillion season, where the daughters of prestigious families are formally introduced to society and everyone is watching. Aru returns as a social pariah. She watches from the sidelines as her cousin Kara, gorgeous, elegant, and beloved, orbits effortlessly through the world Aru was born into but never allowed to keep. And at the center of that world, as always, is Aiden Acharya: the untouchable golden heir of Acharya Media, devastatingly handsome, fiercely guarded, and widely expected to spend the summer making it official with Kara. And most of all, her first love. To Aiden, Aru is a chaotic nuisance from a disgraced family. To the rest of the summer colony, she is a charity case to be pitied or mocked. So when a cruel public humiliation at the season's opening gala leaves Aru with nothing left to lose, she does the worst possible thing: she corners Aiden Acharya and proposes a deal. Fake-date her.

Aru Shah and Aiden Acharya have not spoken properly since the night of Brynne's Diwali party. She's been fine. She's been absolutely fine. She has a curry plant and a job and two best friends who only ask about him every other week now, which is progress. Then Mini and Rudy announce they're getting married in Hampi, ancient ruins, sacred river, the exact city where Aru and Aiden once stopped being enemies, and suddenly she is a bridesmaid and he is the wedding photographer and they are going to be in the same place for seven days and she has no plan whatsoever. She never has a plan. That's always been his job. Told in two timelines, the present, a wedding week unraveling every unresolved thing between them, and the past, five summers of trips across India that built a friendship that quietly became something neither of them had a clean word for: Every Place We've Ever Been is a story about how far two people can travel together while still managing to miss the point. It is also, unexpectedly, a murder mystery. Because on the second night in Hampi, a body turns up in the temple ruins. A stolen divine artifact is missing. And the only two people with the knowledge and the clearance to do something about it are Aru Shah and Aiden Acharya, who can barely look at each other without two years of unsaid things rising to the surface, which makes the enforced proximity either the worst possible timing or, if Sheela's cryptic non-prophecies are to be believed, exactly the right kind. Somewhere between solving a murder, recovering an artifact that could enslave half the mortal world, and watching their best friends get married in a city that remembers everything, they are going to have to decide whether they're brave enough to say the thing they've been almost-saying for five years.

Warnings: Cursing, romance, violence (maybe, but at least the mention of violence), and Kara being nice (because I'm a Kara Apologist). Arundhati Krithika Shah. She's not well-known, to almost everyone. Well, except on the streets. After she lost her parents in a car accident, which killed her mother and father-Krithika and Suyodhana Shah, she ended up in the orphanage. After two years of dealing with the cruelty of the orphanage workers-she refuses to call them her "caregivers"-she ran away. She made a life on the streets, learning how to fight instead of learning math or history, eventually carving her name into the list of people to avoid on the streets. Then there's Aiden Acharya, son of Malini Acharya, famous, no, more than famous singer and dancer. He always got what he wished for as soon as he desired it. He's that popular boy at school that never meant to be popular, but he is. Probably because of his looks-literally, he does get flirted with (I'm sorry, I had to), disappointingly. Aiden learned how to dance instead of how to throw a punch. He learned math and history instead of how to survive alone. He learned manners, how to be polite, how to pretend all day, how to control his temper so that he doesn't snap at anyone. In all honestly, they never meant to bump into each other-especially not right after Aru was in a fight.

The name "Arundhati" was whispered as if it were poison. People were warned-"Don't mess with Krithika Shah, for if her daughter comes to kill you." Each baby since her rise has been told horror stories about her, warned about her. Not one person, whether adult or child, didn't fear her. Except one. And his name is Aiden Acharya, prince of the land. The prince has always wondered what she's like, ever since his childhood best friend, Brynne Rao, sent him a letter, reassuring him that she's alright, just on Arundhati's ship, living with her. What happens when Prince Aiden Acharya is kidnapped by none other than Arundhati Krithika Shah herself, and meets her all-female crew? And what if, the gods forbid, the two fall in love? (By the way, the cover doesn't belong to me! I found it on Google, and decided to use it. It's not my picture.)
