After the events of the finale of the SMG4 series, Mario felt like reuniting with an old friend Cappy to go on power moon hunting, until he stumbles across Meggy in inkopolis and thought that it wouldn't hurt of she came along the adventure, they have been best friends for 9 years since they met, they've been on plenty adventures together with their friends or just the two of them, it'll just be a normal adventure...right?

After SMG4's announcement on ending the show, Mario is completely crushed. Everybody else around him seems to be adapting to the news well, but the same couldn't be said for Mario. He's convinced himself that he had already lost his best friend from retirement. He traps himself inside of the secret room in hopes to stop SMG4 from leaving.
