But tragedy strikes days before her birthday: a towering witch attacks their mountain home, setting it ablaze. Grace rushes to the scene with her mother's friend Lucia, only to find Martha gravely wounded, clinging to an ancient book and glowing green necklace. With her last breath, Martha gives Grace the items as her birthday gift - then dies in her arms. A priest arrives just in time, using a magical cloak to spirit Grace away to safety, though Lucia perishes in the fire. The priest reveals Martha had secretly continued their family's exorcist work to shield Grace, and that she is now the last of the Viridian bloodline.
