Birmingham, 1919. The Shelby brothers have returned from the horrors of the Great War, their eyes harder, their silence deeper than when they left. The streets of Small Heath are grimy with soot and secrets, and though nothing feels quite the same, the family holds its shape-barely.
But one thing is unfamiliar.
A stranger has taken root in the Shelby household. A Frenchwoman, elegant and unreadable, who's somehow found the trust of both Polly Gray and Ada. She speaks little of her past, and yet she's been left alone with John's children, a gesture not given lightly in their world.
Thomas tells himself he doesn't believe in fate. But still, he can't shake the feeling:
He's met her before. Or dreamed her.
And the closer she gets to the family, the more certain he becomes-
She's not here by accident. And somehow, he can't find himself to mind.
