"There's no way for me to know I can trust you." Anger molded his features, blue eyes going glacial. "I took a fucking bullet for you." My defenses crumbled. "You didn't know who you were protecting." His gaze sharpened. "Tell me the truth. Are you dangerous?" The question struck deeper than it had any right to. There was no reason for him to trust me. No reason for me to expect him to. But the way he looked at me didn't promise suspicion. It promised something else. Something far more terrifying. His fingers tightened around his gun.
