It is the year 3017, several centuries ago a renowned scientist changed the world when he exposed to the world's water sources in the entire ocean to a chemical that forever changed humankind. Pollution was eliminated, and people developed their own special unique powers called "Links" as a result of an extra evolutionary stage gained when human beings came into contact with this. These Powers caused a war 200 years ago between China and Japan, Tokyo and most of the country was destroyed before being rebuilt by Kyoto. Now, 70% of Japan is a massive civilization called New Kyoto, a massive sprawling mega City filled with advanced technology and a melting pot for power users. Now everybody in this world has one, Teruki Kosuka wakes up one day in a hospital with no memories of his past whatsoever, not even his own name, this makes him feel hollow, and so he searches for the reason he exists, along the way he encounters a friend from his past he can't remember, and then he joins Hitotsu Kasai who claims to be his best friend at a company called SCIB. Upon joining the special crimes investigation bureau's department 7, he is given the opportunity to fight and apprehend dangerous criminals who use their Link to commit supercrimes that the police can't handle, and they cover the entire Southern jurisdiction. Along the way he recruits a few new rookies to the department picking up those with a troubled past and taking them in he chases for the truth, he chases for his own memories and past which seems to be intentionally hidden from him, as well as his goal to secretly investigate the Calamity of April 15th, the event that happened the very day that he went into a 3-year coma before waking up.

As the newly-appointed Captain of the 1st Division, Teruki Kosuka's life has become... quite hectic. These days his life is filled with catering to the sudden whims of his senior officers, quelling his subordinates' chaos, and searching down any clues about the Calamity of April 15th, a historically disastrous event that nobody will talk about. He receives a mission from the commander and must team up with Lieutenant Raiden who seems to be cool as a cucumber. Their mission? Shut down an illegal underground fight club called "Thug Dome" as well as investigate who the mysterious benefactor of this twisted event is. Government money is going missing, people are disappearing and have been around this time of year every time, and once inside they learn that they will face a truly formidable enemy in Nova Watson. In this underground fight club we're the only way out of the ring is to kill or be killed, will they survive?

After the takedown of the underground fight club known as Thug Dome, the Commander of Department 7 brings everybody out for a day of R&R in Akiba! Hitotsu receives an eerie warning message from Department 8's Commander, Raiden is worried about Teruki's seal coming undone, and Haruna has a sinking feeling that won't go away. Everything is seemingly connected and nothing is as it seems anymore, Teruki is sinking deeper into his despair, and when he finally slips under, what horrifying memories will surface?! Meanwhile an old enemy from his past makes a surprise appearance, what will happen when these two broken people finally meet on their collision course set at terminal velocity?!

After the attack on Akihabara people are asking questions about Teruki Kosuka. The public is wondering whether he's actually an NPC or if he has a devastating power. When the government answers the public, the press demands justice. The order is given to execute Teruki Kosuka, will his friends at the department be able to save him? Or will he be held responsible and killed. Meanwhile Zero trains on Mount Fuji for the eventual day that he will collide with his other half. Iyaragi meanwhile contemplates his next move. All these paths will eventually collide.

After house arrest ends it's time for the annual Rank-Up Competition. A yearly tournament SCIB members are required to compete in. In order to get strong enough to face down his ultimate enemy, Teruki Kosuka is excited to participate in order to grow stronger through doing battle with other power users. During a gruesome match between Raiden and Haruna he feels compelled to step in, and through disagreement he ends up matched up against Haruna during the quarterfinals. On top of that Zero meets Teruki Kosuka for the first time and declares that he intends to kill him. Friends clash, and tears will fall in the fifth volume of AWAKEN!

The finals are approaching, everything is ramping up. The tournament is at a fever pitch and soon, an unstoppable force meets an immovable object. J.O.I. has sent assassins to take out X, meanwhile Iyaragi tries to recruit Teruki Kosuka into his special ops. What dark and sinister plan has he concocted?! Two halves of a whole collide, all to decide one thing. Which has the right to exist? and who will follow the path of revenge?
