But when a Penelope runs into a stranger that defends her from three would-be attackers all while bleeding out, she knows she owes him. He saved her life and now she's In His Debt.

Baillie and Carter are not friends. They never have been and they probably never will be. Not after 17 years of living next door to each other. Not now despite living under the same roof. They don't hate each other, even though they pretend that they do, but they definitely are not friends. Friends don't look at each other like that. Friends don't think about each other like that.
