He didn't usually believe in wishes. Or luck. Or miracles.
But his hand found a coin anyway. His reflection stared back at him, slightly distorted by the moving water. Then, another reflection joined it. Not beside him. Only in his thoughts.
Ji-ah.
Laughing.
Teasing him over his terrible tea-making skills.
Rolling her eyes whenever he worried too much. Smiling. Always smiling. Even lately. Especially lately. And somehow, those smiles hurt the most. Because they never reached her eyes anymore. He closed his fingers around the coin.
"I don't know what's happening to you."
The words disappeared into the quiet garden.
"I don't know what you're carrying."
His throat tightened.
"I just..."
He looked down into the water.
"...I wish she'd stop smiling like she's hurting."
