Everyone thinks Freya is trouble.
She skips class, smells like cigarettes, climbs out of bedroom windows after midnight, and never lets anyone close enough to ask why.
Malachi certainly isn't planning on becoming her babysitter.
He's already exhausted trying to keep his reckless little sister, Kylie, alive.
When Kylie starts dragging Freya into every bad decision imaginable, Malachi decides he's done watching from the sidelines.
He starts driving them places just so they don't walk home alone.
He waits outside parties.
He patches scraped knees.
He takes cigarettes away.
He argues.
He lectures.
He protects.
But somewhere between late-night phone calls, panic attacks, and chasing Freya through rain-soaked streets...
Protecting her stops feeling like a responsibility.
It becomes an obsession.
He can't sleep unless he knows she's home.
He memorizes every scar on her hands.
He notices when she skips meals.
He starts carrying her favorite snacks in his truck "just in case."
And before long, everyone notices the same thing-
Malachi isn't just looking after Freya anymore.
He's completely, hopelessly obsessed with keeping her safe.
The problem?
Freya has spent her entire life running from people who tried to control her.
So what happens when the one person she'd trust with her life slowly becomes the one she can't imagine living without?
