The writing isn't my best, but I still enjoy the plot and want to keep this available for whoever may be interested in my old work.) -- Ellen Collins may not have the best house or job, but she has her family. Unfortunately, her small family is slowly being torn apart. Between both parents working long hours and leaving their young daughter with a baby-sitter, no one is happy. Fate could be kind and help them get back on their feet, but fate can be a cruel mistress; something this family will learn all too soon.

When private investigator Tom Hart flies back to Brooklyn for the first time in a decade, it's supposed to be for one thing: to bury his oldest friend, Jimmy Grillo. The cops call it a mugging gone wrong; a random act of violence on a quiet Bensonhurst street. But Jimmy's wife, Ann, thinks otherwise. She believes Jimmy's death has ties to Carmine Perro, a local bookie and loan shark Jimmy owed money to. As Tom digs deeper, old neighborhood ties pull him into a dangerous web of secrets, lies, and betrayal. All of a sudden I saw another shadow flit across the street. I caught my breath but decided it was nothing, because I knew people would be out at 8 pm. I mean, it's not that late. Skylar grabbed my arm abruptly. "What was that?" My heart started pounding. "What?" Oreo started barking furiously. I looked around the street wildly. I couldn't see anything. Or anyone. "Aubrey," Skylar said. I glanced at her, silently communicating with her, and then we raced down the street. I heard footsteps behind us and ran even faster. We must be getting pretty close to the apartment complex by now. Suddenly someone grabbed my arm and yanked me back. I managed to scream before they covered my mouth with their hand. "Aubrey?" I heard Skylar cry in alarm. "Aubrey?!" I tried to get away from the person but he held me tighter, dragging me back down the street and towards an ominous-looking black car. I was being kidnapped. P. S. This book is totally clean because I try to keep my stories appropriate enough for everyone to read them :)
