PREPACE In this increasingly busy era, I discovered that the best way to stay sane was, apparently, to write AU and become emotionally attached to fictional people who make questionable decisions. The shameless Jibozai, the mischievous Mingyi, and even my line of work in law and justice, where rules evolve faster than anyone would like, somehow all ended up here, somewhere between pursuing a law PhD in cold England and trying to remember what a healthy work-life balance looks like. This story was built from late nights, overthinking, characters who do not technically exist but somehow still cause emotional damage, and the stubborn belief that small stories still matter. Between work, deadlines, unpredictable British weather, and the general chaos of existing, writing quietly became my little refuge. So here it is: a story born from ink, gin, and perhaps one too many bad decisions. I hope this story gives you a smile, a laugh, and a little bit of that refuge too.

Prologue Every story has a place where it truly begins. Ours wasn't on a film set. It wasn't beneath bright studio lights, surrounded by cameras and scripts, pretending to fall in love while an entire crew watched. It began after everyone went home. After the wrap party ended. After the costumes were packed away and the applause faded into silence. People always think the hardest part of acting is becoming someone else. They're wrong. The hardest part is remembering who you are when the cameras stop rolling. So we left. She flew to London with three oversized suitcases and a promise to disappear for a while. He escaped to Milan, then Switzerland, telling everyone he simply needed a holiday. Neither expected London to become more than another city on the map. Neither expected to find the one person they had spent months trying not to miss. Some stories begin with fireworks. Ours began with rain. With one tiny café tucked between a florist and an old bookstore. With the last double espresso. And with one empty chair that changed everything. "A marriage doesn't always end with a shouting match. Sometimes, it just slowly redistributes its weight." High above the Shanghai fog, suspended inside a climate-controlled penthouse on the thirty-second floor, a marriage is undergoing a silent decomposition. Minghao and Yuxiao do not fight; they do not scream. Instead, they simply adapt to the growing distance between them-a slow, clinical calibration measured entirely through the physics of the space they share. It is recorded in a gunmetal wardrobe rail that straightens by three millimeters, a kitchen hopper window left stubbornly open three inches to the damp river air, and an espresso machine reprogrammed to leave one spout entirely dry. ─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ─── DISCLAIMER & WRITER'S NOTE Please Note: This story is an Alternate Universe (AU) work of fiction. The names and visual inspirations used are entirely transformative and do not reflect the true lives, personalities, or realities of the actual individuals.
