She took a breath, trying to keep her voice steady, reasonable.
"Razi... you said I could stay here for a week."
A low, dangerous chuckle rolled through the speaker.
"And now I'm saying you will come back."
Mahi's fingers tightened around the phone. She was sitting on the edge of the old wooden bed in her childhood room, the same bed where she used to dream of escaping poverty. Now she was dreaming of escaping the cage she had willingly stepped into.
"But Razi," she said softly, pleading without begging, "I came here after an entire year. Can I please complete only a week? Just seven days with Abbu Ammi. They're so happy I'm here..."
"Since you are away from me," he interrupted, voice dropping to that lethal calm he used when he was beyond anger, "you are really trying to test my patience. I have told you - I won't repeat myself."
She closed her eyes. Her heart hammered so hard she thought he might hear it across the continents.
"Razi, I have told you as well. I will not come before a week. And that is final."
