(The scariest thing about this story is the fact that it's inspired by actual events.) Bache Manor is riddled with mystery and a dark past that's as elusive as its owner, who seemingly vanished, leaving behind all his belongings, as well as even more unanswered questions. Because of the rumors that surround the manor and its occupants, most people avoid it, which is for the best. When a paranormal team is asked to investigate the historic Bache Manor, they jump at the chance. Thinking it will be just like any other investigation, they're shocked and unprepared by some of the things they find inside. However, their intrigue soon turns to regret when the random thumps and murmured voices turn into terror-filled screams and odd occurrences that seem to go way beyond just the paranormal. What was once thought to be a dream-come-true investigation quickly turns into a nightmare ~ one they may never be able to wake up from. Copyright © 2016 by Janae Mitchell. All rights reserved.

Penny Johnson, middle-aged, recently licensed lawyer, has a small but growing general law practice in her hometown, Midvale Corners. From her two room office above Max's Deli on Main Street, she and her legal assistant, Althea Riversmith, take most problems that come in the door, referring out those too complex for their resources. When Horace Appleworth, local contractor, calls her to represent him for the murder of Dick, the town's City Manager, her first thought is to send him on to the best criminal attorney in the area. Horace will have none of it, he wants Penny. Penny, knowing that the prosecutor, up for re-election, wants a quick conviction, the police are convinced they have their man so won't look further and the Judge doesn't like the disruption of a high profile case in his court room, reluctantly agrees to represent Horace. The evidence against Horace is overwhelming; Horace admits he was at the murder scene but claims Dick was alive when he left, his fingerprints are there, he was seen on the surveillance camera, Dick's killer and Horace are left handed, the murder weapon, a small antique pistol is registered to Horace, no one saw him walk home and he said to all who would listen that he was tired of paying bribes to Dick to get the town's construction contracts. Penny is ably assisted by Althea and the Midvale Corners Investigative and Literary Society, a group of amateur detectives who like to solve puzzles. They take on the task of proving Horace innocent.

Sumner West is the voice behind the world's number one true crime podcast, West Coast Killers. As the siren of the mic effortlessly delivers the script of another six-figure ad, a shout in the hallway breaks through her studio-grade noise-canceling headphones. A brooding LAPD detective throws open the door that seals her from the outside world, demanding an interview. Detective Lucas Saba doesn't know much about the twenty-seven-year-old media maven seated behind the microphone. He's not aware of her controversial rise to internet stardom, of the deeply divided Reddit threads debating the murky past of amateur sleuthing's queen. What he does know is that two students were found dead on UCLA's campus, perfectly mirroring the murders of a 1997 double homicide featured on Sumner's podcast, Episode #142: Ruined Bruins. As Lucas investigates the uncanny connections between recent unsolved murders on his desk and the transcript of Sumner's podcast, the cat-and-mouse game that launched her career-beginning with the unsolved murder of her best friend, Chloe-will cast doubt on the motives of everyone in her inner circle, including the reigning queen of true crime herself. THE PODCAST is an ensemble murder mystery for fans of Lucy Foley's THE PARIS APARTMENT and listeners of Ashley Flowers' CRIME JUNKIE. With elements of dark whimsy resembling Hulu's ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING, this story explores our morbid fascination with true crime through a cast of deliciously deceptive characters in the world of Los Angeles' influencer culture. #1 in suspense / 99K stories #1 in crime / 67K stories #1 psychological / 31.5K stories #1 truecrime / 1.5K stories #61 murder / 176K stories #2 podcast / 1.2K stories #1 arrested / 1K stories All rights reserved, Skara Gray, 2023-2024. 80,000 words.
