As much as Kimberly Astor hated to admit it, she had a slight problem. Okay, so it was theoretically a major problem, but it wasn't entirely her fault. Okay, so it was her fault, (at least to a certain extent, according to her) but her dad didn't need to be all rude about it. He especially did not need to threaten her future role as CEO on it too. And, setting up an arranged marriage to fix said 'problem' is so out of proportion. Okay, it wasn't completely out of proportion, but still. Jace Kingston didn't know what he was getting into when he agreed to be married to a 'problematic heiress'. He certainly was not expecting a sexy vixen, who was hellbent on getting on his nerves and destroying the semblance of normalcy he established in his complex life. So, when the two come together to form a business alliance, they make a simple plan. 1. Fix the problem. 2. Don't ever bring up personal things. 3. Get out. Too bad breaking the second rule is making the third rule look a lot more... difficult. When an illness forces him to retire to the country, he makes sure to choose the property where his wife wouldn't be. Except that she is, and she is still as insufferable as ever. The Duchess resents the man who killed her youthful dreams of love and abandoned her to live his bachelor life unencumbered. When she is jilted by her lover, and faced with inevitable ridicule, she decides to retire to her beloved estate in Cornwall, where she runs an orphanage. Never once does she expect to run into her cold, selfish, insufferable arse of a husband! Forced into each other's company by circumstance, the couple begin to unravel their individual prejudices. Resentment turns into respect and friendship. Respect and friendship soon turn into attraction and affection. Was love closer than either one of them could ever have imagined? Evie: Rowan Alastair Volkov had been my biggest nightmare and rival since I met him. He was like a shadow I couldn't shrug off. Perhaps my own. With his arrogance, his snide remarks, his grumpy frown, and his sadistic smirk, he proved to be the one thing standing in my way to a happy life and a happy ending. Regardless of our history and families, we were strangers. That was until the one link separating us shattered. What I never imagined was Rowan asking me for help. Asking me to be his wife. On paper only. Worse? I never imagined falling for him. We signed ourselves away to certain terms & truths, but now, everything was different. Because I fell in love with him beyond those terms. Rowan: Evie Rose Spencer has been the epitome of an annoying thorn in my side that I can't pull out. I've done everything to escape her. With her sarcastic wit, her confident facade, her brighter-than-the-sun smile, and her sparkly ocean blue eyes, I'd come to hate her more than anybody I'd ever met. But, we had an understanding. Be strangers. Then my whole life began to fall apart all thanks to one inheritance will. I was meant to take the seat beside my older brother and run the Volkov empire. In order for me to take what I inherited, I had to be married and make it last a whole year. If I failed, everything I wanted would be taken from me. The best shot I had at finding a new wife was marrying a stranger. But fate tied me down to Evelyn. We signed ourselves away to certain terms & truths, but if she breaks them, she'll have no one to blame but herself. Breaking her heart was inevitable with this marriage license.
