The day after Flora's fourteenth birthday, she woke up expecting to see her soulmate string facing straight ahead, stretching horizontally from her finger just like everyone had told her it would.
Instead, the thin, glowing string pointed downwards.
Flora sat up slowly, staring at it as it disappeared through the floor beneath her bed. She followed its path with her eyes, almost expecting it to change direction if she waited long enough.
But it didn't.
It continued downwards, deeper and deeper, towards the depths of Hell.
Flora had heard stories about soulmate strings all her life. They were supposed to lead you to the person you were destined to meet, connecting two souls no matter how far apart they were.
They were never supposed to lead to Hell.
She looked at the string again, hoping she had somehow misunderstood what she was seeing.
She hadn't.
Something was very, very wrong.
