I felt his hand as it gently pushed the strands of hair that were blocking his view of my face, behind my shoulder. The action caused his fingers to involuntarily graze my jawline and neck making me stiffen. The short contact left my body feeling warm and my breathing to suddenly turn irregular. "I think you look beautiful." He said in that deep, soft voice that made me feel funny. I could still feel his fingers in my hair as they now seemed to instinctively move around the strands. "Thank you.." I whispered, surprised at how softly it came out. Could he even hear it? "My pleasure mamas." He replied, giving me my answer. The words leaving his lips sounded so good that I had to look to make sure he'd actually said them. Before I knew it my body was slowly leaning towards him and even in my dazed state I didn't miss his inching towards mine. • • • Follow Athena Kingman as she experiences life and love in ways that she's never imagined before. Sixteen-year-old Danica has always flown under the radar-quiet, observant, with her head buried in romance novels and her heart tucked safely behind well-built walls. After transferring to a new school, she's relieved to finally escape the judgmental stares and mocking whispers of her old one. She's not here to stand out-just to survive. But then she meets him. Xavier Moreau is everything she's not-charming, magnetic, and universally adored. The golden boy of the school. The one who makes her laugh in English Lit, steals glances when he thinks she isn't looking, and somehow knows she likes apple juice and purple highlighters. She tells herself it's nothing. That he treats everyone like this. That a guy like Xavier doesn't fall for girls like her. Except... maybe he does. As whispered rumors swirl and lines blur between friendship and something more, Danica must decide if she's willing to risk her carefully guarded heart-or let it slip away in the name of playing it safe. Because sometimes love finds you when you least expect it. And sometimes... it writes a story all its own. A slow-burn, coming-of-age romance full of bookish banter, unlikely friendships, and that aching question: What if he actually means it?

Armed with a razor-sharp intellect and a scholarship, she's a new student at the prestigious Jackson Academy-an elite world of old money, unspoken rules, and the kind of subtle racism that's more dangerous than any overt insult. As the only Black student, Zina knows she's a walking contradiction in a place that wants to put her in a box. Mateo Cobalt is Jackson Academy's golden boy. He's brilliant, popular, and a legacy student whose life is a carefully planned path to success. He's never had to question his place in the world or the systemic privilege that put him there. But when an academic competition forces the two rivals to become partners, they must confront not only their differences, but the world that wants to keep them apart. As Zina challenges Mateo's naive worldview and Mateo defends her against the insidious prejudice of his peers, their intellectual rivalry sparks an undeniable connection. But in a school where appearances are everything, falling for each other might just be the most brilliant, and dangerous, decision they could ever make.
