The blades of my skates scratched against the ice as I finished the rotation. The silence inside the rink was broken only by my breathing and the music still playing in my headphones.
Turn. Jump. Landing.
Almost perfect.
When I came to a stop, my chest was burning from the effort, but inside me there was only one thing left: control.
"Not bad."
The voice came from behind me, and even before turning around, I already knew who it was.
Garrett Graham.
I sighed quietly, pulling one earbud out.
"I didn't ask for your opinion."
He smiled that smile that always looked half amused and half challenging. Leaning against the rink barrier like he owned the place.
"Too bad. Because it was a good one."
I looked at him for a second too long before bending down to tighten my skate laces again.
"I don't care."
"I can see that."
My head snapped up.
He let out a low laugh. Not a real laugh. More like the kind of sound he made when he had already decided the conversation entertained him more than it should.
And I hated that sound.
Because it meant he was watching me more closely than I wanted him to.
"You should probably tell your brother you're here alone, destroying yourself on the ice at this hour," he said.
"That's none of your business."
"No," he nodded, tilting his head slightly. "But it becomes my business when he comes to me asking to 'check on you.'"
I clenched my jaw.
Perfect. Just perfect.
"Then tell him to stop asking you things about me."
For the first time, his smile faltered slightly.
Then he took a small step back, like the conversation had still amused him anyway.
"You know what?" he said.
"What?"
"You're a lot more interesting when you're not pretending I don't exist."
And then he left.
Leaving me there, with the ice beneath my feet and an uncomfortable feeling twisting in my stomach.
