(some good old slowburn)
"I'm sorry," she whispered, unable to look at him. "I shouldn't have just shown up here tonight. That was crossing a boundary. I just... somehow couldn't bring myself to say no. I miss you."
She reached out before she could stop herself and took his fingers in hers. Now that she was standing so close to him, she could see the raw skin around his nail beds. He was hurting himself. He clearly wasn't doing well, even if he appeared calm in public.
Michael let her, his fingers intertwining with hers almost instinctively. He took another step toward her, now standing so close that she could feel his warmth. No matter how cool and distant he tried to appear, he softened in her hands like wax beneath the flame of a candle. The naive, tender hope radiating from him broke her heart.
Lost in thought, she brushed her thumb over his palm, still unable to bring herself to look up. She was far too close to him.
"I miss you too," he replied quietly and gently. The tenderness in his voice sent a shiver through her. She forced herself to look at him again. His doe-like eyes shimmered with deep, vulnerable openness, filled with so much hope that her breath caught in her throat.
