After the previous ruler was killed and replaced with a power thirsty, war craving king, the land is thrown into chaos. People slaughter each other in the streets, shops burn and merchants are beaten to death for outrageous prices. Taxes are passed and if you don't pay them you either get "recruited" for the militia against your will or you are sentenced to a public execution. Only the crazy survive and only the insane thrive.
