I sank my teeth into his hand - not deeply, but warningly.
For several long seconds, we locked eyes in silence. Mr. Calnan made no move to pull his hand away. Instead, he raised his other hand and brought that one toward my face as well.
I tried to lean away, but with the hand still in my mouth, he caught my chin and prevented me from moving my head. My eyes darted between the approaching hand and his face. I sank my teeth deeper and deeper into his skin. It had to hurt by now, but he showed no sign of pain.
Finally, his other hand reached my cheek and cupped it. With his thumb, he wiped away my tears, his eyes never leaving my face.
Then he withdrew his hand. He also tried to pull back the one I had bitten, and I let him.
He stepped back, lifted his hand, and licked my tears from his thumb without breaking eye contact. For what felt like an eternity, neither of us moved.
"What do you want, Miss Wilder? Do you wish to continue our meetings?" he asked at last.
I didn't answer. I was just looking up at him through my tears.
"Well? What is your answer?"
