Crowkit is born into tragedy, his sister dead before she ever had a chance to live and the only cat his mother blames is him. Despite the pain, Crowpaw does his best to focus on being the best warrior he can be, but after another tragedy strikes his life Crowpaw loses himself. Scared, alone and in pain Crowpaw believes the only way to find happiness is away from MoonClan, a place he doesn't feel he belongs. Crowpaw sets out a personal mission to find his strength, and along the way finds himself in a world unknown.

Rosekit does not know of DarkClan at all, or the father who refuses to claim her as his own. Constantly overshadowed by her sister, she is not sure where her place in MoorClan is, or if there simply isn't one for her. Promises of safety and belonging may prove hard to reject if offered. Though DarkClan has ceased to exist, its remnants continue to float beneath the surface, threatening to break the bonds being forged. It is in this cruel setting that Nightpaw finds himself apprenticed to the only cat with an ounce of freedom: the truth-teller, a cat specifically chosen by the Masked to remember the history of DarkClan. Yet, Nightpaw doubts the truth in the truth-teller's stories and finds them even harder to reconcile when he is visited by someone he'd been taught no longer exists. Caught between fear and curiosity, the truth-teller's apprentice finds himself stuck between two versions of the Clan's history - two truths where there should only be one.
