❃ AWARD-WINNING PUBLISHED NOVEL ❃ BOOK I OF THE TRANSCENDENCE SERIES ❃ Growing up during the centuries-long conflict between the empires of Egypt and Hatti, the young princess Istara is taken hostage by the King of Hatti to secure the loyalty of her father, the King of Kadesh to the empire. Soon her new life in Hatti's glittering capital becomes all she knows. Bound in blood before the gods to Hatti's unwilling crown prince, Istara, now Hatti's queen-in-waiting, learns she will never be loved. But the drums of war beat again, and when the scheming plans of Hatti's king threaten the existence of all civilization, the gods give Istara a choice: to leave behind everything she knows to save mankind, or remain where she is, powerless, a token on the game board of kings. On the brink of one of the most brutal battles in history, she chooses to risk her life to deliver a message to the only man able to prevent the prophecy from becoming a reality--her mortal enemy, the Pharaoh Ramesses II. Wounded, cold and hungry, she wanders in the battle's horrific aftermath, and aids a powerful commander, who she learns protected her once, and has been bound to her ever since by a prophetic dream of his future. Despite his resistance, and Istara once more becoming a pawn of kings, they must confront an eternal love so powerful, not even kings, the gods, or death can keep them apart. They call us the Pyros. We are just like Them-in size, in manner, in form. We speak the same language. We walk by the same synchrony of nerve and flesh and bone, and more importantly-intention. One leg out in front of the other. Switching legs, and repeating. We breathe the same way as Them - the involuntary movement of muscle, the rising of our chests, the filling of our lungs. We may require more oxygen than Them, but in the end, oxygen is a luxury indispensable to both kinds. We share the same senses, for the most part. The sense of taste, of smell, of sight. The sense of hearing-listening to the melodious sounds of nature, music, and laughter intertwined with the cacophony of the city during the day, and the wolves that howl at night. We share the sense of touch-of intimacy, of sensation, of emotion. And the sense of betrayal, and the agony that accompanies it. My mother used to say that the Humans had accidentally destroyed their past home, and had nowhere to go. They needed a place to stay, and We had our home to offer. We welcomed them to Ignis, with open arms, and all-too-trusting smiles. I don't believe in accidents. And subsequently, betrayal became the only sense We knew. -- It was only a matter of time before Humans completely destroyed the Earth. With the weapons they amassed, and the pollution that wreaked havoc on the environment- it was in inevitable their home would become uninhabitable. That was the genesis of the Great Migration. Hundreds of millions of Humans were relocated to the distant planet of Ignis, pre-inhabited by the native Ignites, a superhuman species. At first, there was unity. Ignites and Humans lived peacefully among each other, without problems. Then, there was discrimination. And then, there was genocide.

"It's as if the world slows down to a standstill. Touch, taste, smell, hearing, they are all deemed inoperable, all except sight. Sight is amplified. Sight is intensified. Sight becomes my most important asset, and at the same time, becomes my enemy. For if it wasn't for my ability to see, I wouldn't have seen him, with his wide eyes and gaunt face, outstretching his right arm to a peculiar length. I wouldn't have seen the weapon clutched firmly in his hand, pointed directly toward my head. I wouldn't have seen him pull the trigger while looking unapologetically at me. But I do see. I see everything, from his blank, hopeless stare, to the weapon-clad men charging at him unmercilessly. I see him fall to the ground, as if his limbs are pulled out of his body from some unknown force. But first, and to my utter torment, I see his fingertips, blackening and charring as the plague strikes him right before he takes his last breath." © 2014 Liliana Araxes
