Looking at Darlene through my parents' eyes, I can completely see why they find her so frustrating: while her actions stem from deep anxiety and chaotic stress responses rather than true malice, her behavior consistently creates an exhausting blast radius of collateral damage for everyone around her. From an adult perspective, Darlene is a fully grown professional who repeatedly avoids taking accountability, relying on her friends and management to clean up her literal and emotional messes-whether she is bringing a wild horse into Tennessee that wrecks expensive clothes and recording gear, making an insensitive open-mic joke that brings her manager to tears, or karate-chopping contract paperwork in front of corporate executives. Her constant habit of turning personal stress into center-stage tragedies leaves her loved ones scrambling to cover for her, making it easy to view her not as a relatable, misunderstood underdog, but as an emotionally unregulated adult whose self-absorption continuously burdens the people working hardest to support her.
