It's 132 years after the fall of Galbatorix, and the Riders are finally returning. A young girl sees a thunder of dragons flying overhead whilst out playing with her friends, and knows exactly what she wants to be. Ten years on, she still possesses that wish. Despite the wishes of her overly-controlling father, she sneaks out to the Egg Ceremony - and all hell breaks loose.

Eragon, Saphira, and the elves have left Alagaesia to train the next generation of Riders. One by one, new Riders of all four races (humans, elves, urgals, and dwarves) arrive at Du Fells Gedwëy (The Shining Mountains), the new home of the Riders. Eragon and Saphira, with the help of the Eldunarí and elves, must train the new Riders to the best of their abilities. But, with four different races that have never before coexisted in peace, much less learn to fight and ride dragons together, training the new Riders is going to be much harder than either Eragon or Saphira thought. Will Eragon and Saphira be able to defeat the obstacles that stand in their way of peace? When old enemies rise anew, will the combined might of the Riders be able to vanquish them once and for all? Eragon and Saphira have traveled east down the Edda river, out of Alagaesia and into unexplored terrain. They must find a place to train the future dragon riders and keep the eggs and Eldunari safe. Meanwhile the few eggs left behind in Alagaesia have already begun to hatch, the riders need a teacher. They need Eragon.
