When her first love falls apart, a Filipina-Canadian foodie is devastated. To salvage their relationship, Maria joins a social-media cooking contest despite her family's advice to move on. Her efforts draw him back until he reveals his loyalty to his new girlfriend. Crushed, Maria uproots her life to move to Thailand to teach English. As her vibrant photos and contest posts catch her ex's interest, the feelings she tried to suppress resurface. The stress of being a new teacher and handling Adrian's mood swings pushes Maria to her breaking point. As her new friends, including her flirty next-door neighbour, encourage her to move on, she must decide between her ex's apologies and promises, a fling with her hot, commitment-phobic neighbour, or time alone to heal and find herself. A secret program in the United States seeks to replace human militaries with artificial intelligence-driven machines, but the machines aren't so willing to play along. *** Picture a world where humans no longer fight wars. No more families missing loved ones. No more veterans with lifelong mental and physical scars. No more conscription. For the super-secret End of War Project inside the United States government, such a reality is already here. The project models out how artificial intelligence can overcome dangerous and morally sensitive war scenarios with algorithms and automation. The centerpieces are "autonomous combat machines," or ACMs, that look like humans but function like supercomputers. After a string of brilliant successes in the field of combat, the End of War Project is preparing to reveal itself to the public, but something unusual stands in the way. Against their programming, the ACMs start exhibiting all-too-human signs of apprehension, guilt and compassion as they're pushed to perform ever more extreme tasks. The human leaders of the End of War Project race to find who "hacked" the ACMs, but what they find is even more startling--and revealing--than they could ever imagine. ***2019 Watty Award Winner - Science Fiction***

An 'Aim to Engage' sci-fi story of exactly 500 words. °°° Don't get me wrong. I had plenty of ambition when I graduated from Deimos Flight Academy with dual degrees in Aeronautical Engineering and Navigation. Then, the goal was clear, join the Brigade and help further humanity's knowledge of the Terran solar system our ancestors colonized. Maybe even find proof of alien lifeforms. But as it turns out, you can only 'boldly go' if you've already boldly gone to the right schools. So you make do, as they say. Piloting a freighter for Virago might not have been the plan, but at least it pays the bills. Even if the company is a soul-sucking mega-corporation that likes to treat its employees no different than the commodities that it resells, packs, and delivers. Paid on the cheap and shipped for free anywhere in the known galaxy. Which brings me here, millions of miles from home in the outer reaches of our system, gawking alongside the delivery guys at something we shouldn't be transporting. Oh god, I should've never taken this job. °°° Highest Rank: #2 in 'Aim to Engage'

How far would you go to save your world from extinction? What would you sacrifice? Your material wealth, your reputation, maybe even your life? What is your world worth to you? To save the Earth, Kanto Ibrahin has sacrificed it all. In a future where centuries of abuse has destroyed the planet's environment, Earth has been abandoned by humanity. With her atmosphere nearly unbreathable, and sunlight unable to penetrate the dust-filled air, nothing grows or lives on the surface as smog storms race across the dried out basins of her once deep lakes and seas. Formerly an up and coming terraformer, Kanto has been ostracized by those he called friends and colleagues after returning to their abandoned home world in a last ditch attempt to save her. He gave up everything to do so, betting on an untested technology to save Earth where thousands before have failed. And now, he's down to his last tank of oxygen and his last battery cell as he prepares to try and get his tech working for the last time, or die in the attempt.
