This story is HEAVY on personal symbolism. For me, "The Watcher" is a story of my journey as an individual. The barely lit street symbolizes my position in life as of right now. The houses the narrator watched over represent how I tend to put others opinions over my own values. The street lights represented my curiosity. I am, obviously, the Watcher. The dark one represents my fears, my goals, even my questioning of my faith. If you noticed, at first, the narrator and the dark one seemed drawn to each other. Towards the middle, they began to feel more and more comfortable with each other. However, Watcher admits she refuses to leave the dimly lit street because she feels most comfortable where she's at. Happy, no, but comfortable enough. When she reveals this, the dark one gets frustrated and leaves the street forever. Right before he leaves, Watcher began to pursue him. The street lights vanished along with the dark one, except for the one above where Watcher sat. This symbolizes her last hope of pursuing the dark one. However, her fear keeps her anchored on the street. Her final decision to stay put haunts her till the end of her days, which happens to be the end of the world around her. The world ends because Watcher (aka humanity) refused to establish herself as she really was.
