[Wattys 2022 Winner!] Vanessa Brooks, an anxious and cynical seventeen year-old, discovers she can travel to the summer of 1953 through the run-down community pool in her rural Michigan town and risks her future as she falls for a boy who lives in the past. ****** On the last day of junior year, Vanessa Brooks joins her friends for a traditional jump into the city pool to celebrate the beginning of summer and the last year they plan to spend in Palmer, Michigan; a dead-end riverside town with an eerily abandoned historic main street and decaying Victorian mansions. But when she resurfaces her classmates have been replaced by girls in retro swimsuits and bathing caps and guys in thigh-baring briefs with cigarettes tucked behind their ears. When Pete Harrison, an unfamiliar face who seems somewhat familiar with hers, offers a dizzy and confused Vanessa a towel and a ride home, she discovers her house and family missing. She has somehow slipped into 1953, the year her grandparents graduated high school. Using the pool and vivid imaginings of her grandfather's memories, Vanessa continues to escape to 1953- and to Pete, who, despite his unaffected kindness and optimism, has a mysterious bad reputation around town. But as she dives deeper into the summer her grandparents fell in love, she finds herself unable to return to the present without venturing even further into the past to correct a mistake that threatens her family and future. *Content Warning: this story contains scenes of near drowning and other perils on the sea, swearing, smoking and alcohol use* This story is complete at ~90,000 words. "Very good, Wesley," he breathed, the warm air fanning across the merchant captain's face. "Now I suggest you listen closely because I don't do this very often." Wesley curiosity grew, though he kept a healthy degree of skepticism as he listened to the pirate. "I'm prepared to offer you a deal." "What kind of deal?" he asked, his heart racing. "I seem to have found something that I want even more than your ship's cargo," he said with an unsettling smirk. "And I am prepared to let what remains of your crew sail free if I get it." "Name your price," Wesley said, at this point ready to agree to anything if his crew would live. Valentine reached out and tilted Wesley's head up so he could get a better view of it. His smirk seemed to grow as he let one little word slip through his lips. "You." *This is an LGBTQ+ story*

[BxB] Alexander Smith has a love-hate relationship with trashy online novels, scoffing at the problematic main leads, clueless protagonists and the rampant use of cliches. He never understood why the kind protagonist always chose the abusive 'badboy' main lead in every inane love-triangle, especially when there was a wholesome, gentle second lead head-over-heels in love with her that was, frankly, the key ingredient for a fulfilling and loving relationship. So, when Alexander is in a fatal accident and his soul is transplanted into the fictional body of his most hated 'badboy' main lead, he makes it his new life's mission to rewrite the story - he will make the protagonist fall for the kind second lead, he will reinvent his character to be a functional member of society, and he will definitely, definitely stay out of drama. But hey, this is fiction, and fiction loves drama. *** Note: this story is in no way referencing or making fun of any books online (well, none apart from my own), and I am in no way hating on cliches - I am a sucker for the project partners cliche and 'forced to share a bed' trope. Please don't take this story seriously - because I didn't! #1 lgbtfiction (10/08/21) #1 comedy (03/11/21) #2 transmigration (25/08/21) #5 gay (20/08/21) #7 bxb (11/11/21) #11 boyxboy (15/10/21) #12 lgbt (20/08/21) #12 bxb (14/11/21) #79 romance (20/08/21)
