"How could someone do this to him?!" my voice broke into crackled segments of distraught emotion; my stomach still knotted. "Maria, please, you're making him nervous," Susan pleaded with me, her concerned expression holding onto every word. How could I not lose myself to anger and fear though? How could I ignore the pain my care for this horse brought? My hand rested against his frail neck, an effort to calm my flooding thoughts. "I know, I'm sorry. It's just- how could they?" I swallowed the lump in my throat in effort to push away any further tears. My hand glided down his brittle coat and my fingers rippled across dark hair as they ran over the clearly visible ribs which his skin had clung to. His large structure, once bulky and powerful, was now a painful sight. His hair, held down by grime, sunk in with every mountain of bone. His gentle eyes watched me as I stood near him, watching as I defied his view of humans. I wasn't letting him go again, I wouldn't be that timid little girl.

In the blink of an eye your whole life can change. It happened to Tess, and the world when she opened her eyes again was a foreign place. After the accident, there was no Twister, her dressage partner and best friend, and Tess couldn't bear the thought of continuing with her dream career of becoming an equine vet. With legs held together by artificial joints and metal pins, her active and outgoing life is over as she knows it. But then a few years later, an old university classmate, Ollie, appears on her doorstep with an unusual request involving three rescued horses. Tess had sworn she could never have another horse again after losing Twister, but with nowhere else for these troubled horses to go she is unable to turn them away. And so begins the start of a long, exciting new journey with a horse named Diva, and a collection of rescue horses who seek refuge in Tess's home and heart. Similar to Twister in more ways than Tess can bring herself to admit, Diva is a naturally gifted horse, but like Tess she harbours her own demons and has a haunted past. But with a little bit of love and nurturing - in more than one case - can both Tess and Diva overcome these troubles claim a title in the Winter Dressage Championships? Cover made by spiritee.
