El Llano En Llamas contiene 17 cuentos, publicados por Juan Rulfo a partir de 1945, cuando aparece “Nos han dado la tierra" en las revistas América y Pan (a la primera lo lleva su amigo Efrén Hernández; en la segunda debía pagar por publicar), y así continúa, inclinándose hacia América. Comenta sus avances al escribir a su novia Clara Aparicio (a la que dedica este libro). En 1951 se publica el séptimo en América, “Diles que no me maten" (preferido de Elias Canetti y Günter Grass), y con su primera beca (1952-53) del centro mexicano de escritores, fundado por Margaret Shedd, termina los ocho que aparecerán en libro, con los previos, en 1953. En 1955 publica en revistas los últimos dos, recogidos en libro en 1970.
