Not grateful that he saved them in the Fourth Shinobi War, instead they feared him more. Sasuke came back and was praised. Sasuke who betrayed the village and attempted to destroy it was recognized and worship the very ground he was walking on. After failing to bring Sasuke back, Naruto is ridiculed by his peers. Seeing as how people don't appreciate him, he gives up on his dream to be Hokage and leaves the village with a mysterious figure that calls himself "Tobi".
