"The beast is sad and tired," the voice hissed from the shadows like water on hot metal. It sent fear into my chest that wrapped around my heart and squeezed. I was paralyzed. Usually, a claim like that might calm me but not when it's uttered by an 8 foot beastie cornering me in a sewer tunnel. "And...And, what am I to do about that?" I stuttered over my words, my chest tightening up at the lack of oxygen in my lungs. I gulped down as much air as I could, taking clipped breaths as the beast chuckled. I squeaked as I found myself pressed up against the wall, hoping the brick would open up and eat me whole. The beast chuckled lowly like the deep rumble of a volcano, inching towards me with their lurching gait. I flattened myself further against the wall as they reached out, their freezing, bony hand capturing my chin. I was forced to look into those round, fluorescent eyes staring at me through the skull of an elk. "All you need to know, dear human, is that your little renaissance artist won't be here to save you this time."
