Should have made it a bit clearer in the story but here you go: In this world, everyone is born with a grey heart-shaped tattoo somewhere on their arms, back or face. Once their soulmate's tattoo touches theirs, their tattoos become colourful and bright (this is called Enlightenment). This is permanent and the tattoos won't become grey again.
