But when Ren goes too far the police can’t ignore her meddling anymore. In a foolhardy, one-man mission aimed at bringing down the remaining factions of Team Rocket she fails to get their plans and drives the broken organization back into hiding for what could be another five years. Furious, the chief of police in Kanto sends her to the Kalos region, to the Looker Bureau, in an attempt to finally get her out of the police’s way. There, she meets Kota, an apprentice at the bureau, and learns about what has been happening in Kalos in the past few months. In March, Lysandre, the leader of Team Flare, rose up and unearthed the Ultimate Weapon, only to be defeated by the Defender of Kalos. Then, the organization dissolved. ...Nearly. However, now some Team Flare grunts and admin still remain, and those that are left are convinced that somehow they will still achieve their goal. And they’ve been united again to do so. But not with the help of Lysandre. As Team Flare’s actions come to light, Ren and Kota go against orders and get involved, figuring out that the newly arisen organization is nothing like Lysandre’s and that its goal is vilely mutilated and infinitely more genius.

Now, Professor Juniper has come back from her journey of assisting the new champion to an eager young girl, one whose Pokemon journey was put off for years by the events, Riley. And the minute the professor returns she's out the door. As her journey begins, Riley meets a young boy who's labeled himself as a failure, but refuses to accept her help or convenience her with respect. They reluctantly travel together and Riley becomes aware of a name being used to refer to her: Champion, though she hasn't won any gym badges or done anything special. Meanwhile, in the shadows, Team Plasma reorganizes, gaining strength under corrupt Sages and officers and led by Ghetsis. The team preaches a new direction, but the same motives added to a more "direct" and violent approach. It searches for objects it's lost and powerful members who've fled; all the while planning a destructive and unstoppable endgame, eventually crossing paths with Riley. The new trainer sees Team Plasma's vile actions and builds up a hatred for it, becoming determined to stop them whenever they meet while continuing THE JOURNEY OF A CHAMPION.
